Got a little phone call from Mike at the farm yesterday– they’d received my message in a bottle and were stoked! I had written them something along the lines of
Happy summer blah blah blah I meesh you blah blah
THE REASON I’m writing you is I need a place to stay for the last two weeks of September and ANY amount of time you could put me up could help. I can help out with bees, building, gardening, harvesting, brewing, cooking, hunting and gathering, dumpster diving, ???, and/or $$$!
I LOVE YOU.
AND WOULDNTCHA KNOW! But Scotty is going to be gone the last two weeks of Sept and was looking for someone to maybe help with his portion of the rent! Kiiinda like a sublet. A subletito if you will.
Well, hot damn! I will officially be a 3mile resident for two weeks! Yeehaw!
OH. YEAH. and Ted’s gonna come down from Humboldt for a weekend teewww! Yea yea yea my buddy!
ALSO. Have you fucking read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson?
I mean, of course you know the story a thousand times over and probably can sing along to the Muppet’s movie of it to boot, but have you actually ever picked up the original book and read it? It literally is the best book I’ve ever read. It is SO fun, SO exciting, SO swashbuckling, SO beautifully written… ah! I could go on forever, but alas, I think I will go read it now.
Books read this summer:
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
The Life of Pi byYann Martel
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
Trout Fishing in America by Richard Brautigan
The Pill versus the Springhill Mine Disaster by Richard Brautigan
In Watermelon Sugar by Richard Brautigan
After Treasure Island I have Bicycle Diaries by David Byrne (leader of the Talking Heads) waiting for me, but now I”m torn– do I want to find another Brautigan? Or another Stevenson? Or also The Picture of Dorian Gray sounds good! I’ve never read Oscar Wilde before (and apparently the chicks dig him haha).
